POEA issues warning on internet job scams

“Last 6 slots left for XYZ INTERNATIONAL MANPOWER SERVICES (POEA License No. 1223-3837) for the first 20 applicants for Canada February 2018 Deployment”

If you receive an email with the subject similar to the above, please ignore it.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration reiterated its advice to overseas jobseekers to disregard emails informing them of selection for supposed employment in countries like United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States of America.

To show a semblance of legitimacy the scammer uses the name of a licensed Philippine recruitment agency, without the latter’s knowledge, to lure applicants.

The scammer promises high salaries, non-payment of placement and processing fees and other too-good-to-be-true remunerations. Applicants from the provinces are promised free food and accommodation and reimbursement of transportation expenses.

The applicant is asked to pay P3,800 as reservation fee for a mandatory orientation seminar supposedly to be conducted at the office of the licensed recruitment agency.

The applicant is instructed to send the amount through a remittance company and to text details of payment to the receiver of the money. The scammer also advises the victim to wait for an email with “very important information” together with maps and directions to locate the recruitment agency. After collecting the money from the remittance company, the scammer stops communicating with the victim.

The POEA also warned applicants on job opportunities spread through social media.

Scammers post on Facebook pages supposed vacancies of international companies for various positions. The job offer includes high salary, free transportation, free food and accommodation, high overtime pay rate, paid vacation leave and other benefits. However, applicants are required to pay for half of the expenses allegedly for processing of documents including visa or work permit.

Any unsolicited job offer through e-mail and social media which requires payment of fees for seminar, documentation, and processing of visa and other travel documents is a sure sign of a scam. POEA advises applicants to validate the authenticity of job offers with the POEA through its verification system at poea.gov.ph, hotlines 7221144 and 7221155, and POEA mobile phone application downloadable via Google Play or App Store). /END
